Off to Road America

September 15:
All is well, and I think even Mark's [Mark Hershoren -- see The Engine Swap Story in this issue] hopped up 544 is up for the trip. Looking forward to clicking away at what will hopefully be some amazing shots of vintage racing at its finest with special emphasis on the great and wonderful Volvos.

If you should happen to see a pair of Volvos, especially a white 544 and a green 123 GT running down the road, flag us down. We have overshot our mark. Looking forward to an exciting weekend, sorry to all those not able to make it!

We're envious, Michael. Have a great time! Mark's story continues in the next issue. Little did he (nor we) know what he was getting into...

New Volvo documentary

I have just came back from Goteborg, Sweden, where I shot a documentary film about the 1998 VROM (Volvo Rendezvous for Owners & Members) meeting. I spend three days there and shot some twenty hours of raw material. I am now in the process of editing the whole thing into a 45-50 minutes of film.

If you are interested, I can make an article about it and stuff it with pictures. Naturally, I have LOTS of them.

Best regards,
Aviv Peres

Aviv, if it's anything nearly as entertaining as Volvo Forever, you already know we're interested!

RWD Volvos to become classics?

I just looked at Volvo Classics for the first time this morning after reading about it in an ipd newsletter. Great website, and the photography is especially nice! I'll send you guys a picture of my current Volvo, a 1988 740 Turbo Wagon (I previously owned a 1978 242DL, my first bit of Swedish Iron).

With Volvo's recent and drastic (and to me, lamented) change in design philosophy, I think all the rear-drive Volvos are destined to become "classics" (or at least collector's items) as Gothenburg, for better or worse, embarks upon chasing Audi, Mercedes, et al. Oh well...

Anyway, thanks again for the entertaining website and keep up the good work!

Sincerely,
Ray Wodehouse
Seattle, Washington

ray.a.wodehouse@boeing.com

Thanks, Ray. We find that older Volvos are greatly undervalued in the marketplace, even the collectible 1800 series. It defeats us why a '62 MG-A should be worth several times the going price for a rare, Jensen built P1800. May your prophecy come true (after we've bought up all the Volvos we'll ever want, of course)!

Norwegian 244 turbo

My name is Kjetil Berg, and I am a Norwegian boy aged 22. I'm sending you a few pictures of my Volvo 244 Turbo. It was originally an '80 244DL, but I've had it completely rebuilt. It has now got:
  • B21ET turbo engine, M46 overdrive gearbox....
  • What Europeans call a "USA-Front"
  • Lowering springs, Koni adjustable shocks
  • AZEV A 7.5x17 light alloy wheels with TOYO 215/40-ZR17 tires...
  • also a HUGE list of other details, too long to list...
Contact me for more information 'bout it. I live in a small town called Åndalsnes in Norway.

Cool ride

I have really enjoyed your classic Volvo E-publication!

I drive a 1966 122 wagon and a 1967 1800S. The 122 is my daily transportation. I recently installed a/c (using R-134a) in the wagon and it is now officially a "cool ride!"

I did not see a 122 wagon in your gallery, so I am sending a photo of mine which, if you would like to, you may include.

And ... thanks for creating such a terrific web site!

262C Bertone registry

Just discovered your wonderful site and thought I would E this request.

I am compiling information on 262C models on the web under the heading "262C Registry" at mantucci@aol.com. As a longtime owner (have two at this time), partsman, mechanic, ex-ipd employee and fan of Volvos, I became frustrated at the lack of information and/or interest in these neglected models while surfing the web some months ago. So ... I thought "why not?" My intention is to create a dedicated site for the 262Cs later this year if replies are encouraging. So far, all indications are good. I have received support from Volvo/UK, Swedishbricks, ipd (upcoming newsletter insert), and several homepage sites.

To post a listing on the registry all that is asked is year, mileage, color, Bertone serial # (not VIN), any modifications and any interesting facts to my message board at the above E address. When the site is created, registry listing will note Bertone #, year and owner name/country only for privacy. The site will be solely for the enjoyment and information exchange of these models. Site expansion into monthly newsletter, links, etc. is planned. At this time, I have received replies from the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. The interest is encouraging.

Can you assist this effort by making mention in your next issue? Any help will be appreciated. If I can contribute to your site with information, I would without reservation.

Thanks in advance and regards,
Dave T.

Dave, that can be arranged -- even without waiting for the next issue. We wish you great success with your excellent plan.

New fan

Dear people,

Discovered your Volvo mag on the Internet. Great! I've been involved with Volvos for years, organize meets and write things for the VCOA Rolling magazine. I have tons of Volvo pictures that haven't been published. Jim McDonald comes to most of our functions.

I'd be interested in doing things for your magazine.

Thanks, David! We're working your excellent pics into the Photo Gallery bit by bit.

Racing motor needed

Wanted: B20 for Volvo 122 racecar for Volvo race September 18-20 at Road America. Very experienced driver has car that handles and stops. Needs motor! Full race-prepped motor would be nice. Any good short block or long block would help. Have cams and will have head. Running out of time and money for the rest. Any type of donation or sponsorship will be considered.
David A. Hueppchen
dhueppchen@excel.net

"Dave has a car that goes around corners (and stops), with a quick-change rear end, even, and he can drive that course faster than anyone in any given machine, and is a holy terror in the wet."
--Richard A. Hayden

Here you see Hunter Hueppchen, age 4, feverishly working on a new motor for car #5. Despite his best efforts, time is just too short to have it finished in time for the Volvo Gran Prix in mid-September. For the record, David installed an old, stock and worn-out B18 in #5 just to get it on the track, as you see in the picture above. In that configuration, he was able to lap Road America at 69 MPH with a motor that wouldn't exceed 4000 rpm, and run in the middle of the pack. Think how David and #5 would run with a sound motor -- and think how your outfit's name would look on that car, in front of all those Volvo fans, in the club mags, on those videos...

Fear and Loathing: in Elkhart Lake?

"Mark," we asked. "As long as you're going to the big Volvo do with Mike Schultz, how'd you like to take some pics and write up some sort of piece about it?"

Certainly would not rule that out: I'll be the guy in the Shooting specs with the cigarette holder and the crusher hat holding the tape recorder up to the B18s saying "A little louder please"... I will require a credit card for a major petroleum company for my driver Raoul, a case of grapefruit, half a dozen fifths of Wild Turkey, an IBM Selectric and a Mojo wire. If you could see your way clear to have the printshop run off a few blank prescription pads, they will be put to good use. I will not however, spend one more night at Milwaukee's "Bleak House!"

Hungarian Volvo Fan

I'm a Hungarian student, and I have a request from the magazine. I'm studying in a university in Budapest. I like the cars and driving and particularly the Volvos very much. That's why I'm very interested in [ordering your magazine], but I cannot. I haven't got enough money for the magazine. And, unfortunately, I haven't got any Internet service and there isn't any at my university. I'm now at my friend's place who has Internet, but I'm here just once a month so I can't [visit] your web site.

If you are in the position to send me from the [back issues] or some sample to help a inquiring young guy, please [E-mail me] or mail to my home address:

Thanks for your trouble.

hnagy@worldnet.att.net

Istvan, unfortunately there is no printed version of our magazine. It is created electronically for publishing on the Internet only. If your friend has a printer, you may freely print copies of any article -- and don't overlook the Archive.

Back issues of the magazine represent hundreds of pages of print; printing them all up is simply more than we can do. I am sorry. I hope publishing your letter here will help other Volvo fans in your area find youI
